Joan was born and raised in Illinois where she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University and began her career. The roads of retail brought her to San Antonio, Texas to assist in the opening of several retail stores and then onto New Jersey for 27 years where her retail experience continued with some of the most respected names in retail…including Macy’s and Target. Her experience includes managing stores and staff, coordinating inventories and expanding businesses into new territories. In 2015 she and her husband had the opportunity to move south and landed in Hampstead, NC. Joan continued her retail career in NC but in a new sector. She became a territory manager with a large wholesale giftware company. It was during this position that she learned of the business opportunity that lies in Leland, NC. Between the Leland opportunity and her 25+ years of retail experience, Sandalwood Shoppes was born. Joan’s mission with Sandalwood Shoppes is taking her knowledge in all aspects of the retail industry and assisting each and every booth owner to make them successful in their own business.
Aside from work, Joan finds pleasure in her volunteer work. She capitalized her expertise of running a business into running several non-profit throughout the years. She was the President of the Warren Hills Athletic Booster Club for 4 years and Project Graduation for two. She also held various positions on non profit boards including treasurer of the BSA Venturing Crew, Warren Hills Sports Association and Jammin for Jersey. She was the fundraising coordinator for her church in NJ as well as the Washington Lacrosse Club. She is thrilled to be a part of the North Brunswick Merchant Association and looks forward to helping other business owners as well as learning from each and every one of them.
Although work and volunteering are important to Joan, she finds exceptional joy spending time with her husband, Frank of 27 years. They enjoy nature, the beach and spending time with their families. They have two children; Danielle who is an Event Manager for a Non-Profit in Oklahoma and Andrew who is finishing up graduate school at West Virginia University in Civil Engineering in the Spring of 2019.
I currently own and operate Better Together Fitness, a private personal training studio here in Leland. I am a certified Exercise Physiologist with numerous other training certifications and over two decades of training experience. The future growth plan is to expand the current training space to a semi-private and small group personal training studio in this community. My previous education and experience also includes:
- Bachelors and Masters Degree in Exercise Science / Kinesiology
- (8 years) Running a corporate health and wellness center for Verizon Wireless
- (10 years) Senior Project Manager for an IT consulting firm in Connecticut and Maryland; responsible for overseeing and delivering multi-million dollar projects and being the primary liaison between the client and development team
- (4 years) Assistant Store Manager of a Sports Authority
Each of these past experiences have developed excellent strategic planning skills and people skills that I believe will be valuable assets to the newly formed board of the North Brunswick Merchants Association.
In 2014, I moved to Magnolia Greens in Leland, where I currently live with my wife and two kids.
